Okay. I was now alone in a cave, in the dark, with monsters that I have never seen or heard of literally coming out of the shadows. My sister was in danger and was probably going to die. No. Wait. I couldn’t think like that. I was going to save her no matter what I had to do.
I finally broke out of the fear bubble that I was trapped in and ventured further into the cave. I really didn’t know where I was going or what to do, but there was really no other choice. I half expected the gremlins to show up in the cave but they never did.
It was dark, which is something a paladin is used to but for some reason my vision was not brightening up. Usually I can see in the dark with almost no problem. That being the case I decided to move very slowly so that I didn’t fall into some sort of death trap by accident. There were a couple times that I bumped into a few things. It wasn’t anything that I couldn’t manage, though.
Then the voices started.
“Wes,” someone whispered.
“What the hell was that?!” I practically screamed as I jumped backwards.
“Come this way, Wes.” The voice beckoned me to keep heading the direction I was already going. Something began to gnaw at my conscience, like it was the wrong thing to do, but there was still that pull that wanted me to follow the voice.
“It is safe here,” the voice continued.
The voice was wrong and I knew that but I didn’t stop. Whatever answer I needed it would be at the end of this cave here. That was something that I knew for sure. It was where my sister would be, if she were still alive.
The cave never seemed to end. It was like I was heading to the center of the Earth or the middle of a large mountain or something. There were a few forks here and there but I always seemed to know the right way to go. The whispers were guiding me. Although, it wasn’t too long before the whispers began turning into actual voices. They were getting louder and louder, letting me know that I was getting closer and closer.
Eventually I reached my destination, and it was not something that I would have expected. My sister was sitting on her feet with her back hunched like she was utterly defeated. She was completely surrounded by darkness, threatening to swallow her in the blink of an eye.
“Go ahead,” the voice encouraged. “Save her.”
I wanted to, but I knew a trap when I could see one, and there was no pull in the world that could get me to walk up to her and die.
She looked up and stared me right in the eyes.
“Please,” she begged me.
For a split second I almost jumped after her but I stopped myself, knowing that it would be my end if I did. A realization came over me, that this wasn’t real. That everything going on around us was just some sort of dream. It all seemed so real but I knew for sure that this was a trick.
“No,” I said to her. “I’m sorry.”
“Please,” she begged again, louder.
“Something isn’t right here.”
“Don’t leave me here.”
“I have to.” She had been right all along: I needed to get back to the warehouse. Somehow getting back there would get us out of this alive.
The shadows started to move in on her.
“I’m sorry,” I apologized. “I am going to save you.”
I took off, trying to ignore her screams that faded as I put more distance between us. I was somehow moving even faster and I was beginning to get over the fear that had stricken me. The shadows started to close in around me.
Was this just a nightmare? What kind of monster could do this? I began to feel like I knew what was going on but there was something that was blocking my brain. One thing became very clear when I reached the mouth of the cave, however. Whether this was a dream or not I could feel pain, because when the shadow person hit me I felt like I was hit by a truck as I soared towards a tree…
