Rapid Eye Monsters Part 7

Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six

Okay. I was now alone in a cave, in the dark, with monsters that I have never seen or heard of literally coming out of the shadows. My sister was in danger and was probably going to die. No. Wait. I couldn’t think like that. I was going to save her no matter what I had to do.

I finally broke out of the fear bubble that I was trapped in and ventured further into the cave. I really didn’t know where I was going or what to do, but there was really no other choice. I half expected the gremlins to show up in the cave but they never did.

It was dark, which is something a paladin is used to but for some reason my vision was not brightening up. Usually I can see in the dark with almost no problem. That being the case I decided to move very slowly so that I didn’t fall into some sort of death trap by accident. There were a couple times that I bumped into a few things. It wasn’t anything that I couldn’t manage, though.

Then the voices started.

“Wes,” someone whispered.

“What the hell was that?!” I practically screamed as I jumped backwards.

“Come this way, Wes.” The voice beckoned me to keep heading the direction I was already going. Something began to gnaw at my conscience, like it was the wrong thing to do, but there was still that pull that wanted me to follow the voice.

“It is safe here,” the voice continued.

The voice was wrong and I knew that but I didn’t stop. Whatever answer I needed it would be at the end of this cave here. That was something that I knew for sure. It was where my sister would be, if she were still alive.

The cave never seemed to end. It was like I was heading to the center of the Earth or the middle of a large mountain or something. There were a few forks here and there but I always seemed to know the right way to go. The whispers were guiding me. Although, it wasn’t too long before the whispers began turning into actual voices. They were getting louder and louder, letting me know that I was getting closer and closer.

Eventually I reached my destination, and it was not something that I would have expected. My sister was sitting on her feet with her back hunched like she was utterly defeated. She was completely surrounded by darkness, threatening to swallow her in the blink of an eye.

“Go ahead,” the voice encouraged. “Save her.”

I wanted to, but I knew a trap when I could see one, and there was no pull in the world that could get me to walk up to her and die.

She looked up and stared me right in the eyes.

“Please,” she begged me.

For a split second I almost jumped after her but I stopped myself, knowing that it would be my end if I did. A realization came over me, that this wasn’t real. That everything going on around us was just some sort of dream. It all seemed so real but I knew for sure that this was a trick.

“No,” I said to her. “I’m sorry.”

“Please,” she begged again, louder.

“Something isn’t right here.”

“Don’t leave me here.”

“I have to.” She had been right all along: I needed to get back to the warehouse. Somehow getting back there would get us out of this alive.

The shadows started to move in on her.

“I’m sorry,” I apologized. “I am going to save you.”

I took off, trying to ignore her screams that faded as I put more distance between us. I was somehow moving even faster and I was beginning to get over the fear that had stricken me. The shadows started to close in around me.

Was this just a nightmare? What kind of monster could do this? I began to feel like I knew what was going on but there was something that was blocking my brain. One thing became very clear when I reached the mouth of the cave, however. Whether this was a dream or not I could feel pain, because when the shadow person hit me I felt like I was hit by a truck as I soared towards a tree…

Rapid Eye Monsters Part 6

Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five

There we were again, walking down the same path we had been walking down for hours heading toward what seemed like nowhere. A part of me started to think we should have headed back to the warehouse but I was just there earlier and there was nothing. There were no gremlins or anything. So I pushed to keep walking to what I hoped would be something.

This was something that I have never dealt with before. There were shadow wolves and all of it just felt so surreal, like it was a dream. It was like none of it was real and I was going to wake up back at the warehouse. The further we went the more out of touch with reality I felt, which was a new feeling because it was definitely starting to feel like we weren’t going the right way. But by that point it was too late.

“What’s that?” Alex asked while pointing straight in front of us.

“I don’t know,” I replied with a small shiver of fear. “It looks like the mouth of a cave.”

“Mouth” was a very appropriate word for it because it looked like if we entered we would be swallowed whole. It was like it was moving, like it was real. I felt that same fear that took me over when the shadow wolves showed up. And that made perfect sense because there they were behind us, slowly ushering us into the cave.

Gripped with fear my sister and I could do nothing else except go where the wolves wanted us to go. Once we were in the cave they stopped preventing us from leaving.

“I don’t want to be in here,” Alex whimpered. The threat of tears present in her eyes.

“Me neither,” I agreed, “but I don’t want to go back out there either. Let’s get away from these wolves.”

We backed away, going deeper into the cave. It definitely seemed like a horrible idea but really neither of us had a choice but to do so.

What was really upsetting me was that the gremlins were all gone, like they abandoned us. There was no way that this was the agency and they captured them. This was something that I was completely unaware of. This was some force that was very new to me.

“What are those wolves?” Alex asked as we move through the cave, avoiding all of the pointy rocks sticking out of the floor and the ceiling—what the hell are those things called? Eh. I probably should have looked it up before I wrote this. Oh well.

“I don’t know,” I admitted.

“How can you not know? I thought you would know about all of the monsters?”

“I had no idea that there was a such thing as a phoenix.”

“Good point.”

“Whatever is causing all of this is going to die.” I spoke as if I was confident but I certainly didn’t sound it.

“Yeah. If you don’t kill it or them then I will.”

“Yeah.” It was like we were trying to convince ourselves rather than each other.

We eventually happened upon what looked like a catacomb of pathways, like we were going to get lost very easily.

“Which way?” Alex asked me.

“I have no idea,” I said plainly.

“I thought you knew where we were going?”

“Me too.”

“You don’t?”

“Not anymore.”

“I am going to kick your ass.”

“First off, watch your mouth. Secondly, you can kick my ass when we get out of this alive.”

“I will.”

A new wave of fear came over us as something emerged from the shadows. It wasn’t the wolves but something far more terrifying. It was something that was human shaped and there was more than one of them.

In the blink of an eye one of them grabbed my sister and ripped her away so fast that I didn’t even have time to react. Plus the rest of them jumped on me and pinned me on the ground, hovering over me like I was dinner. They were going to kill me and there was nothing I could do about it. I was so terrified I thought I was going to die just from the fear…

Rapid Eye Monsters Part 5

Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four

The shadow wolves—I don’t know if that is their actual name, it’s just the one I gave them—converged on us like a dark cloud. Fear grip me like a vice, threatening to squeeze every last bit of air out of my lungs. My heart stopped for so long I wasn’t even sure that it would ever beat again. It was the scariest moment in my life. It was even scarier than when my parents were killed by those werewolves, and that didn’t make any sense. Why, out of all the monsters, was I afraid of these ones?

I wrapped my arms around my sister and hunched down to protect her from the oncoming onslaught. We sat there for a lifetime waiting for the wolves to kill us. To tear us into so many pieces that no one would even be able to identify us. But nothing happened.

Eventually I gained the courage to look and there were no shadow wolves. The whole field was drenched in sunlight again and there were no monsters in sight.

“Huh?” I mumbled as we both stood back up.

“Where did they go?” Alex asked me, her voice calm and cool.

“I don’t know.”

“This is too weird.”

“Yeah, well, at least I am here to protect you. I wasn’t going to let those wolves kill you.”

She turned to face me with one eyebrow so high I though it was going to leap from her head.

“Are you kidding me?” she blurted.

“What?” I replied.

“You were this close to crapping your pants.” She held up her fingers like she was about to pinch them together, indicating just how close.

“That is so not true.” I don’t know why I argued with her. I definitely was. But it wasn’t like I was going to admit that to her, ever.

“You are so full of it.”

“I don’t get scared.”

She shook her head, letting go of the issue. I wasn’t going to let that one go if I could help it.

We both looked around a couple more times, making sure that the shadow wolves were definitely gone. They were.

“Okay then,” I said, a little louder than I should have for some reason. “I think it is obvious where we want to go.”

“Yeah,” Alex said, acting like she agreed with me. “Back to the warehouse.”

“Not a fat chance. Those wolves were clearly trying to scare us back where we came from.”

“Don’t you think that is a little obvious? If they wanted to scare us away they would just kill us.”

“Maybe they can’t.” I don’t know how that made any sense.

Alex made a face mixed with anger and humor, like she wanted hit me but laugh at me at the same time.

“Don’t be a dumbass,” she finally blurted.

Looking back at all of this my logic might have been right in line with hers but in the moment I knew the right way to take and there wasn’t a thing that she could say or do to change my mind.

“No,” I said with authority. “We need to keep going the way we were.”

We stared at each other like two cowboys—well, a cowboy and cowgirl—neither of us willing to budge. She was young and naïve and I was not. Just shut up. I am old enough to know better and I had to grow up really fast, so don’t act like you know better than I do. I’ve been through a hell of a lot more than most of you.

Alex let her shoulders slump in defeat, just like I knew she would. I couldn’t let her win that battle or I could set the notion that she could be right. I needed to establish authority over her. Don’t judge me.

“Fine,” she mumbled. “Lead the way then.”

“I’m glad you see it my way,” I said, right before I turned around and crossed the field.

We continued down the path to our salvation. At least that is what I thought. I told you, looking back I probably should have followed my sister’s logic…

Rapid Eye Monsters Part 4

Part One, Part Two, Part Three

The trail seemed like the endless road to nowhere, leading us through a loop where everything looked the same. The trees were all symmetrical, like an architect actually built the path. I felt like my head was going to explode with frustration but in my heart I knew it was where we were supposed to go. It was the only way that we were going to survive.

My sister took up the game of kicking a small rock in front of her for the past three miles—yeah I know how to measure distance. Ah, who am I kidding? That was an absolute guess. Nevertheless, it was really starting to bug me. The sound it made as it bounced of the dirt, the dirt it kicked up in the air. Maybe it was just the fact that she found something to occupy her mind, even if it was for a short time.

“Will you cut that out?” I finally spat.

She looked at me for a second, right eyebrow raised high. Then she continued to kick the rock as if I never even said anything. If she wanted to play it that way then I could be way worse.

I ran up to the rock and kicked it as hard as I could, sending it soaring into the woods. There was something really satisfying about watching it disappear amongst the trees. I felt like I would regret that later but right then it was the best feeling I could have had.

“Come on,” she said as she pushed me.

“I asked you to cut it out,” I pointed out, ignoring the fact that she tried to knock me over.

“No, you told me to cut it out.”

“Tomato, tomato.”

“It’s tomato, tomahto.”

“Huh?”

“You said it wrong.”

“Did I? No I didn’t.”

“Yes, you did.”

“Whatever.”

Sometimes having little sister really sucked.

We continued walking, going back to not speaking to each other. It seemed like a good idea since we both hated each other at that moment.

We eventually came to a clearing full of thick grass and colorful flowers—not the really big ones but the small ones you usually see in a field. Something about it just made me feel happy, like I was right that we were heading in the right direction.

“I don’t like this,” Alex said, shrinking back towards the path.

I grabbed her. Not aggressively but just enough to prevent her from running away. That really didn’t sound any better, did it?

“Don’t run,” I begged. “This is where we need to be right now.”

“How do you know?” she asked me, doubt apparent in her voice.

“It’s like it is speaking to me.”

“The field?”

“Sure.

The two of us walked out to the center of the field and then waited. And waited. And waited.

Something was going to happen. I was sure of that. But nothing did.

“I think we should go,” Alex suggested.

“No,” I replied. “I don’t”

Then the sky started to turn black, turning the beautiful field into the seventh circle of hell. There was still some light where we were standing but the edge of the field was pitch black. That is when more of those shadow wolves showed up. This time there were four of them and they were crawling right towards us. They were too close to run without them getting us.

I felt the fear gripping my throat again. I wasn’t able to speak. I wasn’t able to move. We just stood there, waiting to die…

Rapid Eye Monsters Part 3

Part One, Part Two

What happened next was hard to describe. It was almost like the monster that attacked us wasn’t even there, like it was a shadow. It looked like a wolf, but larger and lacking any solid shape. The way it moved was like something out of a cartoon or even a dream.

I pushed my sister to the right and then jumped to the left, letting the monster jump in between. I had leapt into a roll and when I stood back up I was prepared to attack, but the monster was gone. It was like it disappeared right through the wall or melted back into the shadows. My sister and I stared at each other, both ready for when the monster reappeared but it never came back.

After several minutes of waiting I shrugged my shoulders and suggested that we get out of the building as soon as possible. I had no idea what that thing that attacked us was but I did not want to be there when it came back. I still was unsure why I was so stricken with fear.

Once we exited the house it was like the fear that held me so tight let go, allowing a little bit of freedom. There must have been something attached to that house that overcame my instincts. The effect lingered a little bit but we pressed forward.

“We should get back to the warehouse,” Alex suggested with a wince. Her wrists were bothering her from being tied up. She must have been down there for a long time for that to be bothering her that much.

“I don’t think so,” I disagreed with her. “That’s where I just came from and there was no one there. Something tells me we need to keep going down this path.” I pointed to the back of the house. It was where the path I walked down to find the house continued.

“Something is telling me that we need to get back to the warehouse.”

“Well, since I am older and more experienced in this type of situation, we are going to do what I think. You are more than welcome to go your own way but I would suggest against that.”

Alex stared at me, knowing that I spoke the truth and she should listen to me.

“Okay, see ya,” she said happily and started back towards the warehouse.

“Get back here,” I said as I grabbed her arm.

“What the hell?”

“You called my bluff. Good for you. Now, let’s get going.”

While still hanging onto her arm, we headed to the back of the house and continued down the path. I still had no idea where it lead to and was a little scared by that fact but it was the right direction to go.

We walked for what seemed like hours and found nothing but more trees and a dirt path. There were no paths connected that went in different directions, just the one we were walking on.

“We’ve been walking forever,” Alex complained. She hunched her shoulders and looked up as she spoke as if it would give her protest more meaning. It just made her look like a little brat.

“And we will keep walking,” I informed her. “We need to find the gremlins.”

“The what?” Alex said with sincerity in her voice.

“Ummm, the monsters that have been keeping us alive for the last week or two.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

I stopped to face her.

“Little red things,” I explained. “They kind of look like little, red devils. The reason you wanted to go back to the warehouse.”

Her face was blank, like she was staring into the eyes of a crazy person.

“Will you cut it out?” I blurted. “It’s bad enough with everything else going on. I don’t need you to act like you don’t know what I am talking about.”

A wave of fear washed over her face, like I was going to hit her or something.

“I really don’t know what you are talking about,” she admitted with a tremble in her voice.

For the longest time I stared at her trying to get her to admit she was faking it, but she never broke.

“Let’s just keep going,” I finally said. We continued to walk.

Something really weird was going on and it was only getting odder by the second. We needed to escape whatever hell we were in and fast…

Rapid Eye Monsters Part 2

Part One

When I woke up I was in haze, which is not something that happens with me. Ever. The first thing that caught my eye when my vision cleared was that there was no one else in the warehouse with me. Panic immediately set in and I ran around the warehouse like a chicken with my head cut. And that is the second thing: I noticed that my body no longer hurt, not like it did when I fell asleep anyway.

“Hello?!” I yelled, pointlessly. Obviously, there was no response. “HELLO?!” That of course didn’t stop me from yelling again, and louder.

It was obvious that there was no one inside the warehouse, so I ventured outside to see if for some reason they all decided to go on some sort of adventure, but if they did then they went pretty far because there was no one outside of the warehouse either. An idea popped in my head that the agency had gotten there but that didn’t make any sense because why would they leave me behind and why I was feeling better? Something very strange was going on.

There was a path behind the building leading further into the woods, and for reasons that I can’t explain I felt a pull, something telling me that I needed to go that way. I succumbed to the feeling and headed down the path not knowing where it was leading me.

I didn’t have any of my weapons with me but it didn’t matter at the time. I needed to find everyone.

The path was skinny, with the trees covering the sky just enough to darken the path. It was eerie and made me feel uneasy but I pressed forward.

There was a rustle in the bushes to my right, maybe ten feet in.

“Who’s there?” I asked. It was a stupid question to ask and the people that say it in the movies usually end up dead.

Of course, there was no one that answered me.

“What the hell is going on?” I asked nobody. “Oh, okay then.”

I continued down the path to who knows where. Eventually it ended, though, leading to a small house that looked like something straight out of a horror movie.

“I really shouldn’t go in there,” I said out loud. “But what the hell?”

The door screamed in protest as I swung it open. There was a blanket of dust that covered everything, and it was completely furnished with décor that looked like someone occupied it in the 1950s. There were two floors and the stairs going up looked like they might crack or break under my feet.

“Is there anyone in here?” I yelled, still not expecting an answer.

“HELP!” someone shouted. The noise came from down below, somewhere in the basement.

Without hesitation I darted around the house looking for the stairs to the basement. When I found it I descended down the stairs quicker than I could imagine, to find Alex tied to a pipe. I closed the distance between the two of us and cut her loose.

“What’s going on?” she asked me.

“I really don’t know,” I informed her. “I woke up in the warehouse and everyone was gone.”

“I just woke up in the basement. Is this the agency?”

“I don’t think so. This seems a little too weird. We would probably be dead if it were them.”

“I guess so.”

I finally got her loose.

“We should get out of here,” I said.

“And go where?” she replied with her arm open.

“I really don’t know, but staying in here just seems like a really terrible idea.”

There was a growling sound behind us. It didn’t really sound like a wolf but it was the first thing that popped up in my mind.

I turned to face the creature. I couldn’t see it because it was hiding in the shadows at the edge of the basement, but I could certainly feel it.

“Don’t move,” I ordered my sister. She didn’t reply but I could tell she was going to listen.

We were both afraid. I don’t know why. I never get so scared that I am too afraid to attack a monster. Sure, I’ve been scared before, but nothing like this. Not since the night my parents were killed.

The monster then opened its eyes. They were as dark as night but somehow glowing so the two of us could see them. It made a sound like a deep bark and leapt right to us…

Rapid Eye Monsters Part 1

I was spending a lot of time with the gremlins, held up while I was trying to recover from the injuries from the explosion and being shot. I wanted to shoot every single one of them, even though they were trying to help my sister and I. Imagine Mygle, kind of annoying, terrible English. Now picture this but with multiple gremlins and you wanted to kill them too.

We had been there at that old warehouse for just over a week and the gremlins did a really good job of taking care of us, but we needed to get back out there. The agency wanted us dead and we were no closer to saving Kelly. We didn’t even know where she was.

It was getting close to dusk and Alex was already asleep. She was having a hard time healing considering she was still young. All of the gremlins were moving about but Mygle was nowhere to be found.

“How you feeling?” one of the gremlins asked me. I couldn’t be sure because they all looked very similar but I think her name was Pelzy.

“Like I had a bomb go off in my face,” I said.

“I know that. Get over it already.”

She smiled and I returned the gesture. I honestly did like Pelzy a little bit more than the rest.

“Where’s Mygle?” I asked her.

“Out,” she replied, “making sure that the agency isn’t on to us.”

“I hope you guys did a good job of losing them.”

“We did.”

“I need to get outside.”

“I walk with you.”

“I can go myself, thank you.”

“I walk with you.”

“Whatever.”

The two of us walked outside the building where there wasn’t that much to see. Decomposing machinery left from the warehouse, back when it was up and running, and overgrowth covering the building and everything else. It looked the perfect place for monsters, which there actually was so it was rather fitting. It was in the middle of nowhere and that is exactly how I wanted it.

We did a couple of laps around the building without even speaking to each other. I know that Mygle told Pelzy to keep a close eye on me. I assumed he did, anyway, because she followed me around everywhere.

“Mygle say when he would be back?” I asked her, breaking the long silence.

“No,” she responded with a sort of longing. “Should be quick.”

“How did you guys know about this place?”

“Mygle has hiding places.”

“That’s very specific.” I stopped in front the door and turned towards Pelzy. “Look. I want to thank you guys for helping us. We owe you a lot.”

“Guys?” she questioned.

“People.”

“People?”

“Alright, gremlins. Is that better?”

I felt something, a twinge of panic that started to rise from my gut. Pelzy noticed.

“What wrong?” she asked me.

“I don’t know,” I admitted to her. “Something just feels off.”

“It could be you surrounded by monsters.”

“Yeah. I don’t know.”

I didn’t think anything of it and the two of us walked inside. I lay in my bed and slowly drifted off to sleep. I should always trust my gut feeling because we would soon find out exactly what it was…

Misdirection Part Eleven

Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six, Part Seven, Part Eight, Part Nine, Part Ten

I’m not sure how long I was out and I really didn’t think there were any agents in the back, and if they were they might be dead. The only reason I wasn’t dead was because I was a paladin. The same went for my sister. I quickly checked to see if she was in fact okay, which she was but after looking at her I could only imagine what I looked like. We were going to need to see somebody for sure because we were in shit shape.

With every bit of effort that I had I got up and headed towards the house, well at least where the house used to be. If there was anyone in the house then they were dead now, just like the agents I left unconscious. Fields was a sick person who viewed everyone as expendable.

I hobbled back over to my sister and picked her up. She groaned, barely alive.

“I know,” I mumbled. At least it’s what I think I mumbled. I couldn’t hear anything. “We need to get out of here.”

She just groaned again.

Like I said, I didn’t know how long I was out so there was no telling when the rest of the agents would show up. It was difficult, though, because each step was utter agony, more than I had ever felt in my entire life. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bomb blow up in my face before. I also wasn’t sure how we would make it back to the car and if we did neither of us could drive it.

Mygle appeared in front of me. I couldn’t hear him appear and I certainly couldn’t hear what he was trying to say to me. My legs gave out and I blacked out again. When I woke up we were in a car driving somewhere.

“Did you do it?” I asked Mygle. “Are we safe?”

Mygle turned around and nodded to me. I later wondered how we were going to be able to get away with a red gremlin driving a car. A police officer—or anyone for that matter—would probably notice that.

“We need to get somewhere safe,” I continued.

The next thing I knew we were in some building surrounded by gremlins. They were the ones that still followed Mygle.

“What’s going on?” I asked, not really sure what they thought they were doing.

“Relax, we’ve got this,” one of them whispered in my ear. Well, they probably yelled but it sounded like whispering to me.

Wherever we were I knew we were way away from the agency at that point, but I blacked out for the last time. All I knew was that when I recovered I was going to do whatever I could to take the agency down…

Misdirection Part Ten

Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six, Part Seven, Part Eight, Part Nine, Part Eleven

We made it to Arthur’s house and there were a couple agents standing outside, waiting. It looked like not all of them were fooled by our little trick. I hope Mygle was okay.

With the two agents standing outside the door it told me something: that Arthur was in the house. I was going to teach that little shit a lesson, and make him regret the day he ever lied to us.

“Do we go in through the back?” Alex asked me with fire in her eyes.

“No,” I replied.

“Why not? There are two guys posted in the front.”

“Right, but they’ll have two people in the back if not more. They’ll be expecting us to come through the back. We get on the roof and drop on the two in the front.”

“Okay then, lead the way.”

We both crept our way to the side of the house, somehow managing to avoid the sights’ of the agents. Alex was limping and leaving a trail of blood behind her—don’t worry, it will heal on its own—and so was I. My shoulder was throbbing with the pain from the bullet wound. I was going to have trouble getting on the roof without jumping off something and my sister wouldn’t be able to do either. Yes, I know I threw my sister in the air but I had a bit of an adrenaline rush at that moment.

“I don’t think I thought this through,” I whispered.

“How the hell am I supposed to get up there?” she asked with a sneer.

“Give me your axe.”

“Why?”

“Just do it.”

She handed me her axe. I grabbed it with my good arm, jumped off the tree next to the house and landed on the top of the house. I then leaned over the edge of the roof and stretched the axe low enough for Alex to reach it.

“Grab it,” I mouthed.

Alex did as I ordered and grabbed the handle. I made sure that I was holding the axe side of it so I didn’t chance on cutting her. She had suffered enough injuries for the day.

I lifted her up to the top of the roof and then we both tiptoed to the front of the house, right above where the two agents were standing.

“Okay on the count of three we’re going to jump down,” I said.

“I can’t jump down,” she moaned as she pointed at her foot.

“Right. I guess I shouldn’t have brought you up here.”

“Ya think?”

“Alright, just stay here and I’ll do it.”

I counted to three in my head and then jumped down, landing on the agents so quietly I even surprised myself. They went unconscious immediately. I then motioned for my sister to follow me down, and I caught her so she wouldn’t have to land on her foot, which would have been terrible.

“Okay,” I began, “we are going to go in there and get out quick.”

“Why are we even going in there?” Alex asked me. She honestly had a valid point. We had no reason to go in there at all.

“To punch that kid in the face.” Well, there is always revenge.

I opened the door and heard an extra click.

“Oh shit,” I muttered, but it was too late. There was an explosion…

Misdirection Part Nine

Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six, Part Seven, Part EightPart Ten, Part Eleven

The helicopter started firing at us. The bullets were hitting the ground and moving closer and closer to us until they were hitting the ground right in front of the car. Mygle jerked the wheel and took us down a dirt road, narrowly escaping the large bullets that almost tore through the car.

Heading down the crappy, dirt road, we were bouncing around the car like a bunch of idiots. I would have yelled at Mygle but I was a little more focused the helicopter that was trying to kill us. At least there was a lot of cover from the trees.

“What the hell we do?” Mygle asked. “We can’t outrun them.”

“We have to find a way,” I replied to him.

“I could just teleport.”

“If you wanted to do you wouldn’t be here in the first place.”

I heard a whimper come from the back seat.

“What are we supposed do?” Alex asked me with tears in her eyes.

“I don’t know,” I admitted to her. “But we are going to get out of here alive.” I meant that.”

She nodded her head but it didn’t look like she really believed me this time. I honestly wasn’t even sure if I believed myself. I could still hear the chopper somewhere above us but the trees were so thick that I couldn’t even see it.

“Wait,” I practically shouted. “I have an idea.”

“What?” Mygle asked.

“You’re right, you can teleport.”

He stared at me waiting for me to say more. “And?”

“How far do you think you can drive without getting killed?”

Mygle shook his head. “I don’t know what’s your point.”

I didn’t reply. Instead I waited. I waited for him to understand what I was getting at, which despite his terrible English I knew he was smart enough to figure out.

“You’re crazy,” he said, finally figuring out what I was planning.

“There’s plenty of cover from the trees,” I pointed out to him.

“If you are going to do it then do it now.”

“What’s going on?” Alex asked, not catching on to the plan.

I turned around to face her. “We have to jump out of this car.”

“No.” Tears started to reform in her eyes.

“We have to, okay? Mygle keeps driving long enough to get them off of our tail and teleports out of there. When everyone gets past us we skip out of town the other way, maybe even get back to our car.”

“I don’t want to.”

“We have to.”

She sobbed but shook it off as she nodded her head, understanding what we had to do.

“Quickly,” Mygle urged us.

“Just go,” I said.

The two of us jumped out of the car. When we hit the ground we hit hard. With her foot and my shoulder we were both in horrible shape so that definitely didn’t help us.

We quickly found a good place to hide and waited for all of the cars to pass by, and there were a lot. Once I was sure the last one went by we came out of hiding.

“We have to move fast,” I said to her.

“Back to the car, right?” she asked, figuring that I might have other plans in mind. I did of course.

“Not yet. We are going to pay that little twerp Arthur a visit…”
